Jorge Semprún’s eventful life contains many of the historical shifts of 20th-century Europe. Coming from an aristocratic background, he was exiled during the Spanish Civil War. He was a member of the anti-Nazi resistance, a survivor of Buchenwald concentration camp and a communist spy in Franco’s Spain. And all this before he was expelled from the Spanish Communist Party (PCE) and embarked on a career as a successful international writer, later to become Minister of Culture in the newly restored Spanish democracy, as well as scriptwriter twice nominated for an Oscar. An activist in all the intellectual battles of his age, he was a stubborn man who won as many friends as enemies among the European intelligentsia. This documentary tracks Semprún, one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century.
