Through the letters he sent to his friend Poughon, the film traces the first world war as lived Fernand Léger, stretcher, for almost four years.

Sent to the Front, while he thought he could join the camouflage section of the Armies, the painter Fernand Léger, will make from 1914 to 1917 the painful experience of the war live.

While Cubism, of which he is one of the pioneers, is used by the masters to deceive the enemy, that the artists of his generation have almost all integrated this section, Léger, his feet in the mud and walks on the human debris.

The painter will never really accept his fate but his presence on the battlefield allows us to collect an incomparable testimony and to understand how much the War of 14 marked the spirits and influenced the artists.

After 1918, none of them will be able to go into battle with a light heart.
