On April 26th 1986, after the explosion of nuclear reactor number 4 at the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine, a highly toxic radioactive cloud swept across western and northern Europe. On May 1st, it covered three-quarters of French territory. As various European countries took a range of exceptional measures to protect their citizens, France would continue to underestimate the risks.
