Born in Liège in 1741, André Modeste Grétry was the undisputed master of French lyric art of the second half of the 18th century. Arrived in Paris during the reign of Louis XIV, Grétry was successively the favorite composer of Marie-Antoinette, the musician of the Revolution and the protégé of Napoleon. What a career! Yet his music, which was most played in Europe at that time, disappeared completely in the nineteenth. It was not until 2010 that his music resonated again under the gold of Versailles. Grétry, a musician in turmoil, is a man to rediscover.
