Seville, 1618. Diego Velázquez paints “Christ in the House of Martha and Mary”. Is it simply a parable from the Gospels? A morality tale? An ode to the oppressed? What if Velázquez's enigma could be unravelled by the tiny red pepper depicted in the foreground of the painting? From Seville to Mexico City and Madrid to London, by way of the valleys of Oaxaca, this documentary film not only chronicles the adventures, conquests, tragic experiences and artistic inventions that led this pepper to appear in a painting by the foremost painter of the 17th century, but also, in the background, a "war of images" of which we are still the heirs today.
